چکیده

1. INTRODUCTION The Bushveld Complex in South Africa is a layered igneous intrusion that contains the world's largest known deposit of platinum group metals, as well as significant deposits of vanadium and chrome [1]. It spans about 350 km from east to west and is mined from surface down to about 2300 m. The platinum group metals are concentrated in two planar orebodies, the Merensky and the UG2 reefs, which are between 0.7 m and 2.5 m thick, and which dip towards the centre of the complex at between 8° and 20°. Mining is largely by hand-held drill and blast, with some mechanized sections.

A borehole radar system for South African gold and platinum mines

Borehole radar is an electromagnetic tool that can be applied to assist in the delineation of orebody geometry, ideally using routinely drilled cover and exploration boreholes. Successful trials of borehole radar for delineating reef horizons on South African gold and platinum mines have led to the development of a borehole radar system specifically designed for routine application in those eny...

Building a Natural Earthquake Laboratory at Focal Depth (DAFSAM-NELSAM Project, South Africa) by Ze’ev Reches and the DAFSAM and NELSAM teams

The study of faulting and earthquake processes requires direct and near-fi eld observations at the focal depth. Deep mines provide a unique opportunity to make such observations. The linked DAFSAM (Drilling Active Faults Laboratory in South African Mines)-NELSAM (Natural Earthquake Laboratory in South African Mines) projects focus on building an earthquake laboratory in deep gold mines in South...

Structural concepts for Soltanieh fault zone (NW Iran)

Active deformation in Alborz range is due to N-S convergence between Arabia and Eurasia. This paper provides geomorphic traces of regional deformation in NW Iran in order to characterize active faulting on major faults. Soltanieh and North Zanjan fault systems are involved in convergence boundary extent between South Caspian Basin and Central Iran. Soltanieh and North Zanjan faults are major re...

Detecting Buried Mines in Ground Penetrating Radar Using a Hough Transform Approach

A method for detecting buried mines in ground penetrating radar (GPR) data using a Hough transform approach is described. GPR is one of three sensors used in the Mine Hunter/Killer (MH/K) system for detecting buried mines. A buried mine modeled as a point scatterer in object space gives rise to a hyperbolic response in GPR measurement space. Our approach uses the Hough transform to recover the ...

Image Processing and Neural Network Techniques for Automatic Detection and Interpretation of Ground Penetrating Radar Data

Ground penetrating radar (GPR) has gained a distinguished place during recent years as a tool for investigating subsurface objects, yet its output is of low resolution, and in need of further processing in order to make its output readily interpretable. Furthermore, GPR data collected in a typical survey is usually in large quantities, and dealing with such quantities manually to produce final ...
